Florida Carpenter Wins UBC Floorcoverer Olympics

Congratulations to Florida’s own Ryan Altic of Jacksonville Local 702 and Mr. David’s Flooring, for his outstanding display of floorcovering skills at the UBC’s Floorcoverer Olympics.

The best of the Brotherhood’s flooring professionals from the USA and Canada went head-to-head at the UBC’s INSTALL Leadership Conference recently, which featured a timed resilient installation project competition. The five contestants - one from each of the UBC’s five districts (Southern, Eastern, Midwestern, Western, Canadian) - were given 60 minutes to complete an intricate, challenging series of installation skills. Their scope of work included:
  • Pattern scribe
  • Install flat lay
  • Flash cove Tarkett linoleum
  • Install a boot plug for an outside corner
  • Fit two inside corners
  • Groove, weld and skive an Armstrong Medintech seam.
Judging centered on timing, productivity and quality of installation, with penalties assigned for mistakes.

“Ryan did an outstanding job. His display of advanced skills was a great representation of how well our flooring professionals perform for our customers every day. We are very proud of him,” said James Banks, Florida Carpenters’ Executive Secretary-Treasurer.
