Jeffrey Ramirez won the Florida Drywall Olympics!

South Florida Carpenter Takes First Step to Winning $5K For His Drywall Skills

Two of South Florida’s top carpenters put their skills on the line recently in a quest to win $5,000 for their drywall-hanging skills!

Local 1809’s Michael Amonte and Jeffrey Ramirez participated in the first round of the UBC’s Drywall Olympics 2023. The two engaged in a timed installation process of about 65 feet of drywall over metal studs while navigating curve balls such as piping and corners.

Jeffrey Ramirez, an employee of Walker Commercial Interior (WCI), won the contest. He now advances to the UBC Southern District finals in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 8, where he will compete against the winners of the Central South and Southeastern Regional Councils. The winner will represent the Southern District at the national finals in Las Vegas, where the winner will earn $5,000.

Many thanks to the great teamwork among Florida’s Training Program and Regional Council staff to present Florida’s Drywall Olympics. Thanks also to the judges: Tom Dolan and Jeffrey Elliott from the Training Program, and Council Representative Miguel Saldivar.

A special thanks to Milwaukee Tools for presenting gifts to each contestant and to WCI Director of Business Development Kevin Malave for attending.

Good luck in Atlanta, Jeffrey! We’re pulling for you!
